Bahamian Straw Crafts

Bahamian straw workers typically start their craft at an early age, learning at the feet of their mothers and grandmothers, where they learn such intricate weaves as; peas ‘n rice, Bahama Mama, Jacob’s ladder, sour sop, pineapple and fish pot.

The straw used to make Bahamian handicrafts starts as the green leaf of a silver top tree, which is hand-picked, stripped of its rough sides and then plaited.

Leaves from the Sisal plant native to The Bahamas, is another material used to create some of the beautiful works of arts and has a twine-like texture. It is cut, stripped and soaked in sea water for two weeks or longer, then beaten, scraped and cleaned. The end result is a one-of-a-kind product that is 100% Bahamian.
